Squash in Pakistan: Honoring the Legacy, Investing in the Future

• • Islamabad, Pakistan

The names Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan are not merely entries in a record book. They represent one of the most remarkable dynasties in the history of any sport — a period when Pakistan not only competed at the top level of world squash but dominated it so completely as to make opponents wonder whether winning was even possible.

Jahangir’s unbeaten run of five years and eight months remains a competitive record that may never be surpassed. Jansher’s eight World Open titles speak for themselves. Together they gave Pakistan squash an identity that persists to this day, even as the PSA World Tour rankings tell a more complicated story about the current generation.

There are promising young Pakistani players working their way through the ranks of professional squash. The task facing administrators and coaches is to give them the support structures — consistent international exposure, quality sparring, and financial backing — that their remarkable predecessors had in abundance.

Squash deserves greater visibility in Pakistani sport. The investment required to develop the next generation of champions is modest compared to other sports. The return — in terms of national pride and international recognition — could be considerable.
