Historic Hat-Trick by Hasan Mahmud Gives Bangladesh a 106-Run Lead Over Afghanistan

• • Islamabad, Pakistan

A sensational hat-trick from fast bowler Hasan Mahmud dismantled the Afghanistan batting lineup for 240, securing a crucial 106-run first-innings lead for Bangladesh. Making brilliant use of the second new ball, Mahmud delivered a devastating spell that shifted the entire momentum of the Test match.

Joining an Elite Club

Mahmud became only the third Bangladeshi bowler in history to claim a Test hat-trick, joining the elite company of Alok Kapali (2003) and Sohag Gazi (2013).

A Record-Breaking Pace Sensation

The Bangladeshi pace attack was absolutely relentless. Mahmud finished with spectacular figures of 5 for 55, while Ebadot Hossain provided excellent support by claiming four wickets for 56 runs. With this performance, Mahmud etched his name in the record books as the first bowler ever to take a Test hat-trick on UAE soil. Since his debut in 2024, the fiery pacer has now registered five-wicket hauls in the UAE, Australia, India, and Pakistan, while also becoming the fastest Bangladeshi fast bowler to reach the 50-wicket milestone in Test cricket.

How the Dramatic Hat-Trick Unfolded

The momentum shifted dramatically on the third morning. Ebadot Hossain set the tone by dismissing Afghanistan’s vice-captain, Ikram Alikhil (32 off 103 balls), with a vicious delivery that sneaked between bat and pad. From the other end, Hasan Mahmud opened the floodgates. He first bowled Ismat Alam for a single. On the very next delivery, he forced Qais Ahmed to edge a seaming ball straight into the reliable hands of wicketkeeper Litton Das.
The magical hat-trick moment arrived when Mahmud delivered a full, nipping ball that struck Zia-ur-Rehman squarely on the back pad. Although the umpire initially ruled it not out, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto confidently went for the review. The big screen displayed three reds, sparking massive celebrations in the Bangladesh camp. Mahmud then swiftly removed Yamin Ahmadzai for a duck to complete his well-deserved five-wicket haul.

Afghanistan’s Resistance

Rahmat Shah’s Lone Fight

For Afghanistan, Rahmat Shah was the lone warrior, playing a magnificent unbeaten knock of 105. He reached his brilliant century in style during Mahmud’s 21st over, smashing a six and two boundaries. Earlier in the innings, Malik contributed a solid 62 off 120 balls to give his team a stable start before falling to Ebadot, while captain Hashmatullah Shahidi was stumped for a duck by Litton Das.
Despite a resilient 80-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Rahmat and Alikhil, Mahmud’s lethal spell against the lower order ultimately put Bangladesh firmly in the driver’s seat.
